The warning covers rock fishing, boating and swimming.
The dominant swell direction is from the south.
The warning for Friday includes the Byron, Coffs, Macquarie, Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts.
However, the BOM's warning for Saturday only covers from the Sydney to Byron regions.
Meteorologist with weatherzone Jacob Cronje says people considering any water-based activities should take note of the warning.
"Saturday will feature a pretty hefty swell of up to three to four metres and from the south," he said.
"That should start to decrease later in the day to about 2.5 to three metres.
"On Sunday, the southerly swell will continue to decrease to about 1.5 metres."
On Sunday, the southerly swell will continue to decrease to about 1.5 metres.

Mr Cronje said light showers will continue across the Port Macquarie-Hastings through Friday night and into Saturday morning.
"The winds will turn a bit more southerly through Friday night bringing somewhere between 2-5mm of rain between noon on Friday and 9am on Saturday.
"Rainfall on Saturday and Sunday should be less than 1mm on each day.
"You can expect partly cloudy skies over the weekend with the winds progressively shifting east, south-east on Saturday. Those winds will be variable.
"The maximum temperature for Saturday is 21 degrees and one degree higher on Sunday. Cloud cover should keep the minimum temperatures to 12 degrees on Saturday while Sunday will be two degrees cooler."
Monday and Tuesday are likely to feature partly cloudy conditions with temperatures remaining in the low 22 degree range and minimum temperatures around 10 to 11 degrees.
There is the chance of possible showers on Tuesday.
Mr Cronje said the next big rainfall event will likely be on Wednesday with a frontal system moving in from the south west.
"It could bring less than 10mm of rainfall," he added.
