The Cougars surprised everyone and inflicted Port City Bull Sharks’ second defeat of the season in a comprehensive 3-1 victory on Saturday.
Brad Nolan, Will Chappell and Scott Hyslop all found the back of the net before goalkeeper Ian McKie held out the Bull Sharks in the closing stages.
Cougars captain Stewart Dowrick said it was a pleasing victory and one that would give them confidence for the rest of the season.
“Port City have set a new benchmark for play with a few of their players that have come back,” he said.
“It was a good tustle, an even contest and we know they’ll be back for the next game.”
Dowrick admitted his side were more clinical in front of goal.
“We took our opportunities when they arose,” he said.
The captain was especially satisfied with the performance of McKie in his return to the game.
“He has been out for a season or so with a broken hand, but he kept Port City at bay,” he said.
The win saw Cougars replace the Bull Sharks at the top of the ladder.
“It shows the competition is relatively even and any team can win these sorts of games,” Dowrick said.
Cougars face Wauchope Wolverines on Saturday as they aim to consolidate top spot, while the Bull Sharks face Tacking Point Thunder Blue Tongues.
