Hundreds of superheroes were at Oxley Oval on May 19-20 walking to raise money for the Cancer Council and to fund cancer research.
However, for one team of superheroes, this year the Relay has special significance.
For Kelly Cowell and her team – called DoingitforGrant – the walk is just one of the many ways her family is supporting her dad, currently being treated for brain cancer.
“When my dad was diagnosed the doctors said he wouldn’t have a long life expectancy, so for him to even be at the Relay when we officially started walking was quite remarkable,” Kelly said.
“I have gathered a team of my girlfriends and we are walking and raising money this weekend for cancer research as well as showing my dad how much we care for him.
“Our team have gone all out with the colours because my dad loves a rainbow but we are also dressed as superheroes for the Relay for Life theme.”
She said that her team have also been running a raffle that included over 40 prizes.
“As part of Relay you can sell items along the track so we have cakes and lollies for people to purchase and we also had a 48 prize raffle that local businesses were generous enough to donate prizes for,” she said.
Kelly said no one wants to get cancer, but these days most people know someone who has been touched by cancer, so events like Relay for Life are important to help raise funds for research.
“My dad walked in the survivors lap at the beginning of the Relay and he said he was overwhelmed by the support that everyone was giving him as he walked,” she said.
“It is so fantastic that so many people have come to participate in the Relay and we will definitely be back next year.
“Everyone is here for the same purpose and that is to raise money to find a cure for cancer, so the atmosphere has been phenomenal.”
The 2018 Hastings Relay for Life is at Oxley Oval and began at 10am on Saturday, May 19 with walkers in the Relay walking until 10am on Sunday, May 20.
