Library Week, May 21-27 is a chance for libraries to show the public all the wonderful, weird and new things on offer, in a week designed to entice all your senses.
Storytime, morning teas and workshops galore will be among the events celebrating libraries said marketing and programs librarian Kate Forrest.
“Last year’s theme for us was ‘every week is Library Week’ and it still stands true, with so much always going on within the libraries all of the time (events, activities), as well as our regular services (in the library and online),” Ms Forrest said.
“This year our theme is ‘the library has left the building’ – highlighting all of our outreach and eServices which are constantly growing.
“At the moment we have over 34,000 members who loan out more than 750,000 item each year which include ebooks, magazines online and downloads from our free movie and music services.
“We also have over 450,000 visits to our libraries each year and host 90 book clubs so there is certainly always something new to come in and have a look at.”
Ms Forrest said a modern library caters to the need of the whole community so she is encouraging everyone to come along and see what is happening.
“We are really wanting the library to be a community space and a place that everyone can come and relax,” she said.
“Librarians are all quirky people so we are always up for a chat on our new favourite book if you are looking for recommendations.
“We are always getting new books onto the shelves along with our growing catalogue of online resources; so from music and movies to ebooks and online magazines there really is something for everyone.
“We also have started a monthly newsletter that people can subscribe to ensuring they are up to date on what is new and fresh at the library.”
For Library Week, Ms Forrest said there will be a number of activities to accompany the long list of things that happen every week at the library.
“It really is incredible how many things go on at the library every week, from book clubs to workshops and talks there is always something going on.
“However for Library Week we are hosting storytime on Tuesday, May 22 which will be followed by a lovely morning tea which the community is invited to.
