Bowstead surged to the lead in the bike leg after reigning champion David Dellow led the male pros out of the water.
Bowstead took a one minute, 32-second lead over Marino Vanhoenacker with Luke McKenzie and Paul Ambrose another five and a half minutes further back.
In the women’s professional category, Annabel Luxford had to withdraw while in the lead over defending champion Siddall.
Luxford had held a two-minute lead over Siddall, who is expected to finish strongly over the closing stages, but asthma issues forced her to withdraw.
Some experts were indicating new records could be set.
