Private landholders with koala habitat are invited to lodge EOIs by May 21, to be paid to protect and manage this habitat, diversifying their income stream. These tenders are specifically for in-perpetuity agreements, so koala populations can be secured in the wild for the next 100 years.
This $2 million allocation is part of the NSW government’s unprecedented investment of $240 million over five years, and $70 million per year ongoing, in a new private land conservation program.
The focus is on areas east of the Pacific Highway, from Crescent Head south to Laurieton, and for properties with koala habitats of at least 10 hectares (except where land borders national parks, where the minimum will be 5 hectares).
The non profit BCT will offer $37 million for programs in 2018. This will deliver major benefits to the environment and support landholders to carry out important conservation management.
Supporting Can Too
I have dusted off my runners along with a number of team mates to help fund cancer research through the Can Too Foundation for the Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon on Sunday, May 20.
As a former nurse, I’ve seen firsthand how important new and innovative cancer treatments are to patient outcomes.
I know running 21.1km is going to be tough – but it’s nothing compared to the struggle people in regional Australia have to endure when faced with a cancer diagnosis.
Our fundraising night is at the Settlers Inn on Hastings River Drive, Port Macquarie, this Saturday, May 5, from 6pm. We would appreciate you joining us or, you can make a donation at cantoo.org.au/fundraisers/lesliewilliams. For more information call 6584 0977.
