Four year old, Luka, who has been attending Rugrats for over 6 months, has Level 2 Autism that makes it extremely difficult for him to speak and to maintain eye contact with others.
“My eldest boy, L.J. has Aspergers and is affected by noisy environments, whereas, Luka absolutely loves noise which makes it a bit tricky to find the right balance for them both at home,” says Susan.
“My best friend Lisa’s son, Patrick, who is Luka’s best mate and has a special connection with him, was attending Rugrats regularly and enjoying it.”
“Lisa invited us to come along one Friday afternoon and we’ve been coming regularly ever since!”
“Luka looks forward to Rugrats and he gets involved playing air hockey and riding the electric bikes.”
“Prior to this, Luka was very reliant on me but he’s doing better since he’s been attending Rugrats.”
“He interacts well with Peter, the program coordinator, and is comfortable in the environment which means I get a little bit of respite each week,” added Susan.
Rugrats is open to young people of all ages and runs on Fridays from 3pm to 6pm. It is $2 a week to attend, with a light supper provided at 5pm.
