Port Macquarie Mother’s Day Classic organisers hope between 700 and 1000 people will join this year’s walk/run to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
Bron Watson and Jess Higgins are ambassadors for the 2018 Port Macquarie Mother’s Day Classic.
“If we can knock this disease to its knees, it would mean everything to me,” Mrs Watson said.
“For me, I would like people to know it [breast cancer] can happen, it’s random, and please get checked, no matter what your age.”
The mother of five’s goal is to create awareness in people to ask questions about their health and keep asking questions, if unsure.
Mrs Watson, who is amid breast cancer treatment, refuses to be defined by the disease.
“You don’t know how strong you are until you have no choice,” she said.
Fellow ambassador Jess Higgins is also raising awareness.
“Being an ambassador makes me feel as though I’m bringing hope to other young women, especially those going through something as big as breast cancer in their lives,” she said.
The breast cancer survivor is enjoying being a mum to her two children.
“I feel like I can focus on what brings me happiness every day and what brings my kids happiness every day, and enjoy being the healthiest I feel like I’ve ever been,” Mrs Higgins said.
The Port Macquarie Mother’s Day Classic kitty already sits at $2210 thanks to a Pink High Tea at The Westport Club in October 2017.
Kylie Bulmer and Carmen Abi-Saab are the Port Macquarie event organisers.
Miss Bulmer stressed the importance of community.
“We are trying to not only raise funds but a sense of community around the disease,” she said.
“On the day, people can come down, meet each other and talk.”
The five kilometre walk/run on May 13 starts and ends at Westport Park.
The Port Macquarie event is one of many around the nation.
The Mother’s Day Classic is the largest community fundraising event for breast cancer research in Australia.
