Despite the dreary weather on April 14, passionate environmental lovers spent the morning collecting rubbish at Westport Park.
Port Macquarie Seaside Scavenge chapter leader Karen Fulton said the morning had been a great success.
“We are so proud of the community for coming out to clean up our local environment,” Ms Fulton said.
“Everyone has been really supportive of what we have been doing and more and more first time cleaners are coming forward to help us.
“When we set up at a location it always looks fairly clean but as the morning goes on and we collect more and more rubbish, it is always scary at just how much rubbish could end up in our waterways.”
The idea of the scavenge is for people to collect rubbish in exchange for tokens to ‘purchase’ donated clothes, books and toys.
“We had over 200kgs of items donated for people to ‘buy’ after returning their collected rubbish and being at the Foreshore Markets we have had lots of interest from people walking past,” she said.
“We are really happy with the turn out of people today and even though we thought people might be hesitant due to the weather, thankfully that has not been the case.”
