The sun shone, they had a great turn-out and everyone had terrific fun, even though it took two goes to drop the ducks into the Hastings River at Kooloonbung Creek. There was no fowl play and it all went swimmingly.
The Business House Duck Race saw local businesses go head-to-head after buying their special ducks for $25 each.
The Public Duck Race involved 1800 caged ducks being lifted by crane high above Kooloonbung Creek where they will have a birds-eye view of the finish line before the bottom of the crate opened up to drop them into the creek and on their way to duck-racing history.
At one ticket for $3 or two tickets for $5, there were 1,800 chances to win big prizes.
The first prize of $500 was won by Corinne Cox, second prize of $250 went to Kevin Chilvers and third prize of $100 was scooped by Glenda Carson.
The Lions share the funds raised between three very worthy local institutions - Hastings Education Fund, Marine Rescue and the Hope Shop.
“This is the first time we’ve come to the duck race. Mum suggested it,” said Gillian Millard, who was there with her son, Archie and her mother, Bronwyn Carroll.
“Archie is three and a half and he is really excited to see the crane dumping the ducks in the water.”
Daniel and Brooke Ingram from Telegraph Point were very happy to be there with their friend, Maryana Pavlovich, especially since their Mum won third place a couple of years ago.
Vaughan Winter from Port Macquarie comes every year with his family.
“My wife used to take part as a child and we think it’s a great tradition every year,” he said.
