Up to 20 people gathered for the two hour sweep of one of Port Macquarie’s most popular beaches, but according to organiser Liam McAlary, it’s one of the cleanest.
“I think that’s because it really is a locals beach and probably doesn’t have the number of tourists like Flynns,” Mr McAlary said.
"Locals are coming down here every day and looking after the place anyway.”
It is a philosophy they’d like to see embedded as normal for beachgoers – if you pay a visit, pick up some rubbish while you are there.
Last year, Coastal Warrior clean up days netted more than 700 kilograms of rubbish including more than 8,000 cigarette butts from Hastings beaches.
“If we walk away from a clean up day like today with minimal rubbish then we’re happy because it shows that our locals are playing their part.”
Beer bottles and soft drink cans top the list of items collected along with soft plastics – chip packets, food wrappers and straws.
Tacking point Lions Club had a delicious barbecue breakfast sizzling for clean up participants while ANZ Bank Port Macquarie not only offered a team of volunteers but also made a donation.
