Guest speaker and member of the local Climate Change Australia branch, Dave Smith, said he is very concerned about the future of our planet.

Mr Smith who completed a science degree in engineering, before embarking on a career in the computer industry, is now in his retirement and runs courses at U3A on philosophy, science and several other topics, said he has been concerned about global warming since the early 1960s.

“Growing up as a little boy my father explained global warming in terms that I understood and from then on it seemed like such a simple idea that needed to known on a larger scale so that we could try to slow down and try to reverse its effects,” Mr Smith said.

“At the moment we are really at a tipping point for what is irreversible damage to our earth if we, as a society, do not make some changes, especially around our reliance on fossil fuels.”

At the public talk, Mr Smith said he will specifically be discussing the basic levers that control the earth's temperature and make it unstable, and how and why small changes in temperature cause large changes in climates around the planet and why those changes are not conducive to our present civilisation.

“The talk is a chance for people to come along and have their questions asked as well as to learn more about global warming and climate change and what can be done to help reduce the long lasting damage it is causing.”

The talk will be at the CWA tearooms on Horton Street, Port Macquarie, from 5.30pm on Wednesday, February 21.
