LETTER: Writer, resident opposed to leash-free dog park

I am writing this letter to you with my concerns for the leash free dog park planned for The Boom Reserve.

The reserve at the moment is a clean, well maintained area. With a playground area for young children, an open area where families come for picnics, a game of football, cricket, frisbee throwing, flying drones, walking, jogging, and people walking their dogs so they can get exercise with their pets.

Child day care minders meet once a week for their teddy bears picnic day.

The pond at the bottom of the reserve, with the lovely tree area and quiet atmosphere have made this area attractive for a wide variety of birds, ducks, deer, kangaroos and koalas. There is a tree inside the proposed fenced area that has, and has had for years, a healthy bee hive in it.

And we have witnessed koalas crossing this area in order to reach their desired trees.

We are concerned that this area could be a health risk and environmental hazard.

When you put unfamiliar dogs into a fenced environment together you have a risk of a dog fight, fleas, Pavo. Dogs like to pee over everything, especially other dog’s pee and when it rains the area you have proposed to be fenced off goes underwater and swampy, it will flush all the dog waste into the bottom pond and contaminate the pond.

The Boom is on a busy bus route, and as our streets are narrow we already have trouble with cars. So where do you think people will be parking their cars? It might be a good idea if you talk to Busways.

A local real estate has said a leash free dog park will decrease the price of homes in the area.

We already have a garbage bin on the north side of the reserve that is constantly overflowing and covered in blowflies and maggots. So how often do you propose these bins to be emptied? Because if you go to Nobbys Beach the urine stench makes you sick and this will be the same. Or will we have to ring council every time they need to be emptied?

The Boom reserve is a lovely space in a residential area – please keep it that way.

The council has other land in the industrial area where the dog park could go, not interfering with ratepayer homes.

Ask the mayoress and other councillors if they would like this at their back door.

Please don’t waste ratepayer’s money by putting a dog park where it is not wanted – put it in the industrial park or out near the airport.

I say no dog park for The Boom Reserve.
