This year, Cancer Council NSW has partnered with Port City Bowling Club in their mission to mobilise the community to beat cancer, kicking off the 2018 Relay for Life challenge with a superhero themed barefoot bowls evening on February 9.
From 6pm on the night Port City Bowling Club are hosting the local launch for Relay for Life which will take place on May 19-20 at Oxley Oval.
The launch, is an opportunity to spark interest and get the community excited for the lead up for the relay.
The event has a superhero theme and is a chance for new and existing relay participants to celebrate the official launch of the Relay, according to Co-chair of the Hastings volunteer committee Mel Collins.
“The Hastings Relay For Life is to be held at Oxley Oval on May 19-20,” Ms Collins said.
“This launch event on Friday night is a chance for the community to come along, find out a bit more about Relay while having a bit of fun bowling and dressing up in their best Superhero outfits.”
Katie Mead, community relations coordinator for Cancer Council NSW, thanked Port City Bowling Club for engaging with the organisation.
“We look forward to a long and valuable association in our quest to finding a cure for cancer,” Ms Mead said.
“Every year in NSW alone, more than 39,000 new cases of cancer are expected to be diagnosed, and the impact on families, carers and communities is significant.
“The Relay for Life is a great way for people to come together and help fight the fight against cancer in a fun community environment.”
Katy-Lee Waldron, marketing and club grants coordinator for Port City Bowling Club is very excited about the new partnership.
“We are looking forward to being involved in the event in May,” Ms Waldron said.
“Cancer Council NSW has a number of programs operating locally which support our members and any community members who face a cancer diagnosis, so we are delighted to be able to support this cause.”
Funds raised from Relay for Life support prevention programs, information and support services and provides assistance to the 373 people in the Port Macquarie-Hastings region diagnosed with cancer each year.
