We are extremely fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals and groups that go out of their way to enrich the lives of others in our local community.
This Thursday, we’ll have the privilege of recognising these local heroes as we announce the 2018 Port Macquarie-Hastings Australia Day award recipients.
These dedicated people give so freely of their time for the betterment of our community, and as mayor, I’m honoured to have the chance to congratulate this year’s nominees and award recipients on behalf of our community.
The night will include entertainment, in particular a must see performance by the local Birpai Mitjigan Dance Group.
I encourage everyone to join me and show your support for the nominees by attending the Australia Day Awards ceremony at 6pm, January 25, at the Glasshouse.
Free Australia Day events
Australia Day is a time when we all come together to celebrate our rich heritage and culture and celebrate everything that’s great about being an Aussie.
So grab the fold-up chairs, thongs, sunnies and sunscreen and get along to one of the many free Australia Day events on Friday.
There will be a great range of activities the whole family can enjoy, with an Aussie barbecue kicking off celebrations on North Brother Mountain at 7.30am; and one at the Wauchope Showground at 8.30am. These will be followed by live music, children’s games and official Australia Day ceremonies.
If you’re in Port Macquarie, the Town Green will come alive with sing-alongs, big bands and food stalls from 8am.
I’ll be attending each location with Liz Deep-Jones, our official Australia Day Ambassador for 2018, so please come and say g’day if you see us out and about.
