The umbrellas have had limited use to date and have remained closed with Port Macquarie-Hastings Council concerned about their movement during high winds.
The umbrellas were a necessary part of the Town Square upgrade providing shade while young trees along the streetscape become established.
“The umbrellas are an important addition to the Town Square, providing shade for visitors and diners and complementing the trees that are still establishing,” said council’s acting director, Dan Croft.
Testing has indicated that the umbrellas have not performed to council’s required specifications for stability and safety under various conditions.
“Council has liaised with the supplier and trialled adjustments. Regrettably this has not addressed our concerns and a decision has been made to remove the umbrellas,” mr Croft added.
“We are now exploring alternative shade structures and interim arrangements for the Christmas holiday period.”
