The fourth annual Luke O’Neill Memorial Charity Shield Day will see touch football players of a vast range of abilities remember Luke who tragically passed away in 2013.

Team nominations co-ordinator Bec Faddy said there would be 21 teams this year – with the focus on fun rather than results.

Team numbers have increased from 16 last year to 21 this year.

“It does puts everything into perspective,” Faddy said.

“We’ll split everyone into pools and the top two go through to the finals and grand final.”

Faddy said it was an opportunity for community spirit to shine through.

“It’s an occasion where everyone from the community can support everyone else in a fun environment,” she said.

“It was a sport Luke loved.”

Also included in the day are a variety of other activities to keep everyone entertained, from raffles to sprint and three-legged races.

“We’ll also have a deejay and there will be gumboot throwing as well.”

Games kick off at 9am and finish at around 3pm. Each team will play four games of touch football, 25 minutes per game, and enjoy a bunch of fundraising events.

The family then decides who the money from the event is donated to – usually a local family who are doing it tough.

Defending champions the Young Guns will aim to make it two wins in a row.
