Wauchope branch secretary Janet Kesby said that the initiative has been a while in the making, but should be able to help women in need.
“The project is a part of family and domestic violence awareness month, and because one of our core aims is to improve conditions and welfare of all women and families, naturally we wanted to help out in some way,” Mrs Kesby said.
“Last year there wasn’t much in Wauchope about White Ribbon so this year we wanted to do something really big, but also something that if a woman is having problems, doesn’t draw much attention to herself if she is feeling unsafe.”
Since the project was conceived, a number of coffee shops in Port Macquarie and Wauchope have taken up the pledge to use them.
“Most people drink take away coffee so putting these sleeves on the coffee cups is a simple way for women to get information they might need,” she said.
The sleeves have the phone numbers of emergency groups who can help in family and domestic violence situations.
