NOMINATIONS are now open for the 2017 Hastings Sports Awards.

Cyclist Liam Magennis took out last year’s Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship and has used the $4000 on offer to continue on the path to the top of his sport.

He said it placed less pressure on living expenses for the next 12 months.

“I used it mainly for food, equipment and maintenance,” he said.

“Sometimes you feel like the sport you’re in doesn’t get recognised if it’s not footy or soccer.

“I didn’t expect to win it, but when I did it was a pretty big compliment from the community.”

Magennis followed in the footsteps of Mekayla Everingham, James Magnussen and Ryley Batt in winning the scholarship.

Applications for the 2017 Wayne Richards Sporting Scholarship will close on September 30.

All finalists will be invited to attend a presentation breakfast to be held at Panthers, Port Macquarie, on November 13, where the recipient of the 2017 scholarship will be announced.

“You’ve got to be in it to win it,” Magennis said.
