The community in 2012 identified Spencers Cutting as being the section of road most in need of an upgrade.
Member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams today announced planning work for the improvements has entered the next stage.
“I’m pleased to say the review of environmental factors for work at Spencers Cutting is now on display,” Mrs Williams said.
“This is a significant day for communities along this section of the Oxley Highway and shows the NSW Government’s commitment to improving safety and travel times on the road. The proposed upgrade includes creating an eastbound overtaking lane between Spencers Cutting and Rawdon Island Road.
“The intersection at Rawdon Island Road would also be realigned and the highway widened.”
Mrs Williams said the current alignment of the road at Spencers Cutting is poor, has inconsistent line marking and inadequate clear zones with not enough opportunities to overtake.
“This region is a recognised growth area of NSW and traffic volumes are expected to significantly increase. Residents have also long called for improvements, but for a project of this scale lengthy planning work has had to be carried out to ensure the upgrade is done right.
“Once the upgrade is complete, travelling on the highway at this crash black spot will become safer. The project team will be at two ‘drop-in’ sessions to answer questions and receive feedback on the review of environmental factors and concept design.
“All feedback received will be carefully considered before the project progresses and the community will be kept informed,” Mrs William said.
The community sessions will be held on Wednesday September 20 between 3pm and 7pm in the carpark of Vickers Fudge Factory at Sancrox and Thursday September 21 from 3pm to 7pm at the Wauchope Senior Citizens Centre.
A community update is also available on the Roads and Maritime Services website, which provides an overview of all projects being carried out on the Oxley Highway.
Community members can give feedback until Friday 13 October by writing to Roads and Maritime Services PO Box 576 Grafton NSW 2460 or emailing grafton.regional.office@rms.nsw.gov.au
