The market for tree changers is growing and it’s easy to understand why.

A quiet life, clean air and a friendly, small community are all attractive according to Dorrigo Elders Real Estate agent John Starr.

“The majority of our buyers are coming either from larger western properties to downsize or are retirees from major cities,” he said.

He said Dorrigo was reasonably “drought-proof” and was close to the coast and all it has to offer.

Dorrigo’s productive land can grow just about anything from a top veggie or ornamental garden and the area is known for its dairy and livestock industries.

“But it’s not right on the coast and the cooler climate, clean air, good rainfall and high carrying capacity country is highly sought after,” Mr Starr said.

“Most tree changers want good views, privacy and anywhere from 2 hectares up to 100ha if they can get it.”

People from all walks of life are attracted by the idea of a rural tree change.

The friendly and welcoming community atmosphere of small country towns like Dorrigo was also a drawcard.

“Cost of living here is also far more affordable than in large cities,” Mr Starr said.

The 2016 Census data showed seven in 10 people still live in capital cities – that’s most of the 24.4 million Australians, while about seven million people call NSW home (4.8 million in Sydney alone).
