The Kids Cancer Project’s special science bus is travelling around the country, stopping in 20 towns between Townsville and Sydney.
On Saturday August 12, they parked in Port Macquarie to spread their message.
The charity’s founder, Col Reynolds is a former bus driver who would take the sick children from Camperdown’s Children Hospital out on day trips.
He then started The Kids Cancer Project when he found out that science and research was the only way to a cure. Every year 950 kids in Australia are diagnosed with cancer, which kills more children than any other disease in Australia.
“Cancer in children is different to that in adults, and science is the solution to finding better treatments, and hopefully a cure for childhood cancer. We have 27 scientists and we’ve provided $36m in research in the most prestigious research laboratories in Australia,” said Col.
“Sadly, children are neglected, but we don’t take that at all. Science will open a door that will lead to a solution for cancer.
“The Science Project Bus Tour is a great opportunity to not only gain ongoing support from Australians, but to also to educate fellow Aussies on the importance of scientific research in finding a cure for children who suffer from cancer, and to inspire and encourage continuous community involvement,” he said.
The bus is sponsored by Premier Motor Services, Caltex, Bayer and others so it’s not costing the charity anything to thank their supporters around the country, and to raise awareness about childhood cancer.
