It took returning officer Maureen Morris just five minutes to officially declare Peta Pinson our new mayor.
Ms Pinson was the only one of the five candidates in the July 29 by-election to attend the declaration on Friday.
The new mayor secured the by-election after securing 20,823 votes after preferences were distributed. She secured the top role from Rob Turner who secured 19,950 votes after preferences.
Ms Pinson said at Friday’s declaration that she would undertake an induction on Monday and through next week before meeting councillors.
“The reality of the victory is setting in now and it is very exciting,” she said.
“This role is all about learning and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.”
