About 30 people involved in the Hastings Secondary College Robotics Team 6508 have been celebrated in an assembly at the Westport campus on June 6.
The Hastings Secondary College’s Hastings Team 6508 was made up of students, staff and parents from both Port Macquarie and Westport campuses. The team competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition world championships in Houston, USA in April.
The FIRST Robotics Competition is a large-scale robotics competition. FIRST is a not for profit charity founded in 1989 to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology.
The overseas competition followed the team’s success in Sydney where they placed third in the South Pacific Regional competition.
Hastings Secondary College executive principal Willem Holvast said the team’s success had put Port Macquarie on the map.
Mr Holvast said students had taken advantage of networking with teams from across the world.
Local Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams congratulated the students for representing the Hastings community not only on a national platform but on the international stage.
Ms Williams thanked the staff and parents for their support and commitment in helping to ensure the students competed in Sydney and Houston.
Ms Williams presented certificates and a Hansard transcript to each of the 20 students involved in the project to acknowledge their achievement.
