The Lake Cathie Skate and Recreation Park Project committee was successful in receiving a Port Macquarie-Hastings Council community grant to the value of $10,000. This money, together with an extra $9000 in fundraising efforts, will be put toward design concepts, community engagment and final plans.
The Lake Cathie Skate and Recreation Park Project was initiated by the Lake Cathie Bonny Hills Lions Club as a result of a growing need for a recreational facility for the youth of Lake Cathie. From an initial public meeting in August 2016, an enthusiastic working group of community members was formed.
This group is working with the assistance of the Lions Club, and the support of Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, to develop a new recreational hub in Lake Cathie. The group’s aim is to have an integrated approach of both landscape architecture and active recreation design that results in a unique skate and recreational park built on the foreshore of Lake Cathie.
The dedication of the Lake Cathie Bonny Hills Lions Club to the vision of this project becoming a reality, is illustrated in their decision to make this their major project for 2017, to celebrate the Lions International Centenary Year.
The group will be seeking to engage with as many youth in the area as possible to deliver a facility that meets the community’s needs.
In the coming months, representatives from the chosen design company will visit the area for site assessment and workshop with the group on design concepts – this will be an excellent opportunity for interested youth to gain experience working alongside specialist public space and skatepark designers.
The group meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 6.30pm at the Lake Cathie Bowling Club and interested members of the public are invited to attend.
