“A ruptured pipe within the Christmas Cove Caravan Park at Lakewood caused sewage to enter Queens Lake last week, and as a result the council have been undertaking extensive water quality testing,” spokesperson said.
“Results from the testing indicate that bacteria levels are within the range suitable for recreational activity and NSW Health has advised the lake is safe for recreational use.
“The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is regulator of the oyster aquaculture industry and will advise growers when they may resume operations.
“Repair works within the caravan park have been undertaken by the owners, and Council will continue to monitor the park’s sewage system.
“The safety of the community and local environment has been of the highest priority, and the council would like to thank the community for their understanding and patience.”
Questions have been put to the council over the lack of signage at boat ramps warning lake users of the water quality during the incident.
The council was notified of the leak on Wednesday January 4 and closed the lake to recreational and commercial use on the evening of Friday January 6, sending information to the public via Facebook and news media via email.
