The Stars of the Hastings Dance for Cancer event on Friday, November 25 at Rydges is one of NSW Cancer Council’s major local fundraisers. The sold-out event has already raised over $51,000 and will exceed the $60,000 target.
In this year’s line-up are Peter Besseling, Tracey Fairhurst, Carissa Dwyer, Gavin Rippon, Gavin Wilcox, Rob Hamilton, Lynda Bryan, Lucy Licciardello and Michelle Percival, who will take on dance genres from the cha cha to rock n roll and disco.
Special guest judges Paul Mercurio and Michael Crosslands will entertain throughout the evening and provide the dancers with creative feedback.
All money raised is directed back into the Hastings community to financially support individuals and families throughout cancer treatment.
For the past three years, Cancer Council has been providing Hastings residents with free patient transport to treatment.
The service was set up in 2013 specifically to support Hastings cancer patients and their families who would otherwise have no way of getting to their vital cancer treatments.
The Transport to Treatment service ensures that Hastings residents who are facing a cancer diagnosis have one less thing to worry about and consists of a Cancer Council provided vehicle and a team of dedicated volunteer drivers.
“Our volunteer drivers support cancer patients and their families who travel to treatment, often at short notice and from quite remote locations,” Tim Chapman, Cancer Council NSW’s community programs coordinator, said.
“It’s not unusual for our drivers to get home late in the evening after a patient’s treatment has been delayed or complications have occurred, to ensure that patients return home safely.”
In 2015 the Transport to Treatment service completed 310 trips and travelling over 8,500 kilometres throughout the wider Port Macquarie/Hastings area to ensure they receive vital cancer treatment at the Port Macquarie Health Campus.
