The learner driver mentor program assists young, disadvantaged learners aged from 16-25 to complete the compulsory 120 hours of supervised driving before gaining their P1 licence.
Neighbourhood Centre coordinator Julie Trowbridge said youth are provided a free service to help them gain the hours, however they do pay a fee to encourage dedication which is given back upon completion.
“Gaining a licence could open so many doors for these young people and could be the gateway to increased study and improved employment opportunities,” she said.
Six mentors have been trained and nine learner drivers are already on board the program.
The Australian Lions Foundation, Port Macquarie Lions Club and the Neighbourhood Centre pitched in funding to purchase the car and were able to pick it up from Port Macquarie Holden on Thursday.
“Port Macquarie Holden have said they’d assist with the service and tyres however we do need ongoing community support to ensure this programs stays,” she said.
