After a six year hiatus from the State League competition, the women’s senior Port Macquarie Dolphins basketball team is holding tryouts next week.
Former player Dee Hudson is excited at the prospect of returning to the court.
She said she expected the team to be even more competitive then when it last graced the Port Macquarie Indoor Stadium court.
“It is great fun and I’m looking forward to it again,” she said.
“We used to be pretty competitive but I’m expecting the team to be just as competitive, if not more, this time around.”
Hudson said the women’s team was abandoned due to a number of the players moving away at the time.
“We’ve had a few of them move back now as well as a bit of interest from others who want to play,” she said.
“So a lot of us are just that little bit older now but I think we’ll have a good mix.”
The women will be in with a great chance if their new coach is anything to go by.
Ann-Marie Healy has done several impressive stints around the world.
She was offered a scholarship at Jacksonville State University in America where she played in the competition for five years and also spent a year playing professionally in Spain.
Despite her extensive background coaching a senior women’s side will be a first.
“I’ve only coached kids teams before,” she said.
“But I’m looking forward to it, the club looks in great shape and there is a lot of support and there’s a good management structure.”
While the women’s team will be holding meetings and a trial next Tuesday, the men’s squad is also gearing up for a big year ahead.
Trials were held for the men’s yesterday and veteran player coach Jason Berry is back at the helm.
Berry took time away from the sport last year but is back to lead the men’s team.
He said he was excited to be back affiliated with the team once again.
