New cafe by day and restaurant by night

IMPROVEMENTS continue at Port Marina with the latest addition of business billed as a cafe by day and restaurant by night.

Former Sydney couple Nathan and Lisa Beattie opened Quaylime at the marina about three weeks ago after weighing up several sites in Port Macquarie.

“It [the premises] needed a lot of work but we fell in love with the location and the rustic appeal,” Mrs Beattie said.

The business, with a focus on local wines and produce, employs seven staff and is searching for more staff.

A cocktail lounge will open upstairs area during the winter.

Existing development approval will pave the way to create a second level outside deck with views across the marina and Hastings River. Mr Beattie is an electrician by trade and Mrs Beattie, a former real estate agent, started a German deli at Sydney’s Fox Studios before the pair moved to Port Macquarie 18 months ago. The family put their own stamp on the premises before they opened Quaylime’s doors.

“Everyone loves the location, everyone loves the atmosphere and the way it looks,” Mrs Beattie said. Port Marina manager David Reay said the Quaylime, and cafe Buzz which opened last year, complemented each other and brought more people to the marina.

“We are focusing on occupancy now,” Mr Reay said.

Mr Reay said the the marina was proud of its 100 per cent occupancy and the tenants were strong performers. Fuel sales have tripled in the past three months with almost all the town’s commercial boats using the fuel facility.  Other improvements at the marina include the replacement of a berthing arm in 2001, in addition to renovations and landscaping. Meanwhile, the marina precinct is identified in a draft foreshore vision on exhibition.

The plan of management, once adopted, will guide the future development and management of the Port Macquarie Crown foreshore and waterway. The draft document identifies redevelopment potential at Port Marina.
