A strong bowling performance from Comboyne in the second dig, led by captain Andrew Glover with 5-28 from 10.3 overs, left the team with a target of just 122.
But it still went down to the wire. Comboyne had 25 overs to play with, and passed the total on the last ball of the day.
Tom Salter took a single to win the match. He finished with 65 not out, and Glover made 43 not out.
Comboyne struggled to make 85 in the first innings last weekend, and Glover said Sam Tinsey’s 18 helped his team no end.
“He got us up to 80-odd,” Glover said.
It was Comboyne’s second-innings bowling that really got the team the win.
Glover said Bill Newell, who took 4-10 from seven overs, was the standout, and helped restrict Pirates to 77.
“Billy was the best, but all the bowlers did their job,” he said.
He was modest about his own efforts.
“I fluked it,” Glover said.
Pirates captain Paul Stait said Glover was the difference. “They took a couple of good catches off his bowling,” he said.
"You can’t over-analyse though, when you lose a game like that, otherwise you’ll start blaming all sorts of things.”
The match between Camden Haven and Port City Leagues Magpies was certainly an interesting one. After being washed out last weekend, both captains declared their first innings at 0-0 after one ball was bowled at Wayne Richards Park.
Camden Haven captain Nathan Kerr said the cheeky declarations ensured the game had a result.
“We didn’t break any rules,” he said.
He said it was no different to making an aggressive declaration with runs on the board.
Chris Cole hit 64 and Kyle Bray 47 as the Magpies piled on the runs to declare at 6-228 in their second innings.
“They scored them too fast for us,” Kerr said of the Magpies.
Andrew Howe took two wickets for the Haven. Daniel Minns, Garrett Baker, Sam Kerr and Jayden Hudson also snared wickets.
The Magpies’ total was too much for Camden Haven, and Kerr conceded at 5-167.
Owen Geard and Sam Kerr hit 36 each. Nathan Kerr made 29. The Magpies shared the overs around, with nine blokes rolling their arms over.
Spinner Ashley Anderson took two wickets, while Scott Dickson, Craig McElroy and Jesse Schmidt took single scalps.
Macquarie Hotel was the other big winner on Saturday. The Macca got a nail-biting first innings win over Wauchope RSL at Andrews Park, before going on with the job in the second innings.
Big English opener Luke Findlay was running out of partners, until number number 10 Dylan Rumble came to the crease. They put on 50 together to ensure the first-innings win.
The Macquarie bowlers were tight to dismiss Wauchope for 94 in the second innings, leaving batsmen 73 to win.
Macquarie got the win with five wickets down in the last over of the day.
Captain Michael Pelley was a pleased man yesterday.
“It got a bit closer than I would have hoped, but an outright’s an outright,” he said.
“But full credit to them [Wauchope]. There are two ways you can go in a second innings.
“It can be dead boring, or exciting.
“Credit to them for going for it.”
