A red carpet lined the entrance to the Montage Terrace in Beverly Hills and singer Keith Urban was guest of honour.
A judge on American Idol, he performed an acoustic set starting with Flame Trees by Cold Chisel reminding everyone just how it should be done. The crowd sung along.
He and wife Nicole Kidman have both been nominated for Golden Globes, announced on Monday (Australian time).
Urban - who received a nod for co-writing the song For You - and Kidman received two acting nominations for The Paperboy and HBO biopic Hemingway & Gelhorn, are over the moon at being able to share the experience.
"It's not lost on us how amazing it is. For the both of us to be nominated at the same time is just magical," he said.
Qantas ambassadors John Travolta and Miranda Kerr fronted up. Kerr's husband Orlando Bloom was not with her further igniting rumours about their marriage.
Travolta said his affinity with Australia is as strong as ever. "It's been a long love affair. Australia gets me," he said. TV presenter Laura Csortan MC'd the night.
Other guests included actors Axel Whitehead, Callan McAuliffe, Phoebe Tonkin, Bella Heathcote and Anthony and Jonathan LaPaglia. The next big event is the G'Day
USA black tie gala where Paul Hogan and Rose Byrne will be honoured.
Shelly was a guest of Qantas and Swisse for G'Day USA.
