So much time and preparation goes into making sure December 25 is picture perfect that the real message of Christmas is annually blown away in a frenzy of gift-wrapping, food, alcohol and revelry. Today the Port News has urged drivers in particular to take care because the life they impact on in that split-second decision could be that of others who are innocently doing the right thing.
The cost of such a mistake will be long felt by the innocent’s connections as well as the guilty’s extended circle of support.
Christmas should be about making the small sacrifices of putting time aside to live in the now –a time to park your problems from work, finance and relationships.
Drinking should take the form of drinking in the weather and joy derived from being around your loved ones. It should also be time for reflection on spirituality and if that means going to church to reconnect, or surfing the iPad for the meaning of life then time should also be put aside for yourself as much as those around you.
The invasive nature of modern society means it is increasingly difficult to escape. However now is the one time of the year to put aside negative thoughts, think of the people who have been with you and the people you have lost this year – and most importantly – the people who need you for what you are.
Enjoy these precious days and memories and have a safe and Merry Christmas.
