Showers can't deter sailing combatants

SHOWERS interrupted Port Macquarie Sailing Club's racing throughout Sunday.

Race 10 was a fun affair with Pete Fitzroy setting a favourable course with plenty of reaching arms up and down the river.

In the monohulls, Robert Barwick's Magic Pudding made the most of these conditions, making up ground on the rest of the fleet in bursts when he broke free of the water with his hydrofoils.

Barwick managed to secure first on the handicap results with his solid performance leading Red Star skippered by Peter Fitzroy and Kelly Miller, and Flembouyant Skippered by Paul Robertson and Carl.

The Yardstick results saw the two double-handed boats streak to the top joined by Normal Broomhall on Piglet.

In the catamarans both the yardstick and handicap results were the same with Jack Corthals on Harpic leading Stella piloted by Tony Kuhn and "No Name" by Grady McNee.

The boats took to the water again after lunch for the third club championship race. With a heavy shower during lunch which temporarily turned the breeze into nothing more than a zephyr before the sun brought with it a strong north-easter.

With 11 boats taking to the water the racing was close between the catamarans with Jack Corthals and Tony Kuhn trying to stake claims on the local favourite for this weekends' State title battle. In the end it was Jack Corthals taking the outright yardstick placing while Grady McNee took out the Yardstick results.

In the Monohulls Paul Robertson and Carl valiantly held off Warren Sykes and Brandon on Jumping Jack for the win on yardstick while it was Red Star crewed by Peter Fitzroy and Kelly Miller who took the outright handicap win.

This weekend will be a bumper one on the water, with the Port Macquarie Sailing Club hosting the Arrow Catamaran Class State Championships over two days, sailing on both Queens Lake on Saturday and the Hastings River on Sunday.

The Ted Kuhn Cup will also be contested on Sunday, with crews visiting from Great Lake Sailing Club in Forster-Tuncurry, thrills and spills should ensure so come down with a chair and take a look.
