Pirates couldn’t quite replicate their on-field success in the competition, despite leading 4-2 over Newcastle at halftime.
They went down 6-5, after injuries took their toll in the second half.
The Pirates were down to two reserves.
“Our blokes ran out of puff,” team manager Pete Gerathy said.
Club president Steve Shields said the team adapted well to the sand.
“But the pace and the lack of fresh reserves did its damage,” he said.
Vikings did have their time in the sun though, beating Pirates in an earlier round robin game.
Third place earned the team some silverware, and veteran forward David Tunstead said the Vikings would definitely be back if there was a competition next year.
“We’ll put in a couple of sides again,” he said. “It was a great day for the club. It would have been a fantastic day if the weather was a bit better.”
Tunstead said the pace was fast for the opening of the games.
“The first couple of minutes was quick, then it slowed down a little bit,” he said.
The Vikings kick off their social touch competition at 6pm tomorrow.
Anyone who is interested can come down and have a run ahead of training kicking off after Christmas.
