Friends of Kooloonbung Creek came together to celebrate state recognition at a morning tea on Tuesday, May 1.

The environmental preservation club are passionate about helping the local flora around the Kooloonbung Creek area and were spoken about in State Parliament by local Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams.
The citation Mrs Williams read said “The House congratulates the individual volunteers of the Friends of Kooloonbung Creek for their role in maintaining the 60 hectares of bush land around the creek and their efforts to regenerate the native habitat and ensure a food supply for local koalas.”
President of the group Dave Comish said the recognition was a lovely.
“I think we are all passionate about helping the local environment and it was just wonderful that Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams was able to talk about us in parliament,” Mr Comish said.
“For all our members it is a great pat on the back for all our work and though very unexpected it is wonderful.”
Jean Ballands, another member of the group said as the group grows, they have taken the opportunity to educate the community the importance of the local environment.
“We love talking to people about the work we do because we all think it is so important that everyone understands how significant our ecosystems are,” Ms Ballands said.
“It is especially important that our young people understand so they can help in the future.”
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council ecologist Rebecca Montague-Drake said the recognition is a testament to the all hard work the group does.
“Over the years the group have expanded the area the cover and have really improved the local environment,” Ms Montague-Drake said.
“It is always amazing to see just how much work they have done when I go and visit them and this recognition is a great achievement.”
Ms Montague-Drake said the really do an important job for the ecosystems around Port Macquarie and the Kooloonbung Creek.
“The work the Friends of Kooloonbung do is not always glamorous, pulling weeds and removing rubbish from the creek but they do an extraordinary job helping the environment,” she said.
