Guest speaker is Emeritus Professor at University of Newcastle and honorary research fellow at Oxford University, Terry Lovat.
He is speaking on: Distinguishing Islam from Jihadism: An Imperative for Harmonious Understanding.
His research straddles theology and education, with a particular emphasis on Islam and the theological analysis and educational sensitivity required of the times we live in.
The presentation will explore the ease with which Jihadist extremism has become a public face of Islam in the west, partly through skewed use of Islamic sacred sources and partly through the religious illiteracy on the part of the general population that allows this misrepresentation to go unchallenged.
The result is seen in the potential for Jihadist extremists to radicalize a small portion of the Muslim population as well as engender fear about and revulsion of Islam in the non-Muslim population.
It will expose the weakness of many Western attempts to address this problem, including school-based de-radicalization programs.
"It will move on to propose a form of education that might deal better with such matters.
The forum is on Thursday March 22, from 6pm untnil 7.30pm at Port City Bowling Club, Owen Street, Port Macquarie.
