A Bonny Hills resident says a public meeting will discuss an alleged sewerage spill at Rainbow Beach late last year because the community was ‘not satisfied with the replies from council’.

Steve Bryson said the public meeting will be at the Wauchope Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club on April 16 at 5.30pm.

The sewerage spill is top of the agenda while Mr Bryson said a development application for Beach Street and several other matters will also be discussed.

But it is the spill that is causing the most angst within the community, he said.

“The alleged sewerage spill on Boxing Day last year followed a rainfall event into Saltwater Creek, which flows onto Rainbow Beach,” Mr Bryson said.

“The residents are not satisfied with the replies from council and they require measures be put in place to prevent events like this occurring again.

“A sewerage spill ruins the Rainbow Beach environment and endangers the health of all swimmers.

“We are all aware that our area, Bonny Hills/Lake Cathie/Camden Haven are earmarked by tourism authorities for major growth, so unless council is prepared to listen to our concerns and address them, our current infrastructures will not suffice.”

Mr Bryson said mayor Peta Pinson, councillors, state member Leslie Williams and federal MP Dr David Gillespie were also invited to attend.

Mr Bryson said council had been invited to address the meeting.

“I think it would be fair if council were able to provide responses to our tabled concerns first,” he said. “And I look forward to the council’s positive response to the community’s concerns.”

The public meeting is at the Wauchope Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club on Monday, April 16, commencing 5.30pm.
