Port Pirates Mid North Coast Premier Cricket League campaign wrapped up at Wayne Richards Park on Saturday with a five-wicket loss to Taree West.
As has been the case at various stages this season, Pirates had their opportunities, but ultimately couldn’t take them.
Captain Gary Humphreys (28) led the way as Pirates originally set Taree 118 to win which was revised to 111 off 38 overs after several rain delays.
Jared Humphreys (18) and Mick Foster (15) also chipped in with valuable runs before Taree chased it down in 27 overs.
“We were probably 20 or 30 runs short and bowled something like 17 wides,” Humphreys said.
“A couple of dropped catches really hurt us; the bloke that scored most of their runs was dropped three times.”
Humphreys said conditions were challenging, with a two-paced pitch and showers that regularly swept across the ground.
“The pressure built in our innings and we had another collapse in the middle which didn’t help.”
While Pirates struggled through the season without a win, Humphreys said the experience for their younger players will be invaluable.
“It’s been a great introduction into the Premier League for our juniors,” he said.
“We just probably need two more experienced players in the middle of the order for the rest to bat around.”
