The teenager is more at home with a bit of swell, but that wasn’t the case at Swansea-Belmont Surf Life Saving Club.
Coach Melinda Cockshutt said the lack of water movement probably cost Brabant in the end.
“The conditions didn’t really suit him because it was really flat and he’s a good paddler,” she said.
“He usually goes really well when he can use his surf skills, but it was more a case of paddling really quick at the weekend.
“It came down to a sprint up the beach and we all thought he won because it was that close.”
Port Macquarie clubmates Fleur Sherlock, Harry Askew and Jayden Rossiter also performed well over the weekend.
Sherlock picked up a bronze medal in the flag event, while Askew finished sixth in the swim and Rossiter finished sixth in the sprint.
Cockshutt said both Sherlock’s and Awkew’s performances were tough ones.
“I think flags are really tough and Harry finished with two top six finishes in the under-12s so that was a good effort,” she said.
