The RSPCA aimed to clear the shelter with $29 adoption fees for all animals, in an attempt to find new homes for the 50 animals in Port Macquarie over the weekend of February 24 and February 25. 

Port Macquarie resident Dustyn Andrews adopted one-year-old Maddy and couldn’t wait to take her to the dog beach. 

“I live right near Nobbys Beach so I think she’ll love going running down there,” he said. 

Maddy was surrendered by her owner who had to move overseas. 

Dustyn has recently moved back home after living in Canada. 

“Now is the right time (to adopt),” he said. 

Dustyn said he was attracted to Maddy because she’s such a happy dog. 

“I think we’d enjoy each other’s company,” he said. 

Martine Phillips and Margaret Craig adopted a five-year-old cat called Benji. Martine said they wanted an affectionate cat to add to their family. 

The RSPCA Clear the Shelters initiative is Australia-wide, with the aim to pair as many animals as possible with new owners. 

The $29 fee includes normal adoption procedures, including desexing and microchipping, vaccinations, veterinary checks and behavioural procedures.
