Dementia Australia is holding a free family carer education workshop for Port Macquarie residents.
There are an estimated 425,000 people living with dementia in Australia and approximately 142,000 live in New South Wales. It is likely you or someone you know is caring for someone living with dementia.
The aim of the education session is to provide strategies to families and friends involved in the care and support of someone living with dementia, enabling a healthy and respectful relationship to be maintained through effective communication and understanding.
The course is supported by Mid Coast Communities and will be held at the Port City Bowling Club over two days on Thursday, March 15 and 22.
Day one topics include;
- The nature of dementia
- The impact of dementia on the person and their carer
- Effective communication activities
Day two topics include;
- Understanding and responding to behavior changes
- Community services and planning ahead
Carers who attend the course will also have the opportunity to meet with others who are sharing a similar experience, allowing time to socialise and share important links to local support services.
Registration for the event is essential. To register or for more information, please contact Dementia Australia (02) 6584 7444 or email nsw.midnorthcoast@dementia.org.au.
