Head lifeguard James Turnham said surf conditions in the Port Macquarie-Hastings area had deteriorated in the past 24 hours and conditions at some beaches could look deceiving.
“Surges and strong flash rips are occurring randomly and are catching people unaware,” Mr Turnham said.
Volunteer lifesavers have closed Flynns Beach this morning (February 17) and will reassess conditions as the day progresses.
Meanwhile, lifeguards extended their patrols on February 16 until 6.30pm due to the large groups of people arriving at beaches after the NSW Junior State Cup games.
Lifeguards made five rescues at Town Beach between 5pm and 7pm and three rescues at Flynns Beach, as well as many assists and preventative actions.
Off-duty volunteer lifesavers at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills, performed five rescues with the majority of people unaware they had walked straight down the beach and into a rip.
“Today, lifeguards strongly advise that all visitors swim at a patrolled beach which include Town, Flynns, Lighthouse, Bonny Hills and North Haven beaches,” Mr Turnham said.
Lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers will be on standby into the evening today and may extend roving patrols as needed.
“Remember, if you don’t see red and yellow flags up, you shouldn’t be swimming, as it could take some time before help arrives if anything was to go wrong,” Mr Turnham said.
