The ship which was seen around lunchtime, gave beach goers something to look at spending some time in our immediate waters particularly between Town Beach and Shelly Beach.
The patrol vessel has a home port of Cairns and forms part of the Australian Navy’s 13 boat fleet targeted at protecting the nation’s fisheries, immigration, customs and drug law enforcement operations.
The patrol vessel also works in collaboration with other government agencies as part of the Australian Border Force and in the event of a war outbreak they would be tasked to control the waters close to the Australian mainland.
The vessel is home to 21 crew members, sits at just over 58 metres in length and has a top speed of 25 knots and a 6770 horsepower thrust.
The ship is manned by one of two crews at any one time, with either Lieutenant Commander Ken Brown and the Port crew or Lieutenant Commander Robbie Baker and the Starboard crew at the helm.
