Mr Calbert, a resident of Port Macquarie for 18 years, also says his five year stint with the Hastings Men’s Shed was further inspiration.
“All the guys here have been very helpful,” he said. “I really appreciate everyone for their assistance at the shed.”
Mr Calbert said the guitar took some 150 hours to build and includes an in-built music stand and a case.
“I’ve just about finished the entire job. I might get some time to practice a bit more now,” he added.
The 87 year old has been playing steel slide guitar since the age of 12 years and has made a couple of instruments over the years, including guitars, ukuleles and mandolins.
He is a member of Baptist Ukulele Group and also practices with other groups throughout the month.
Along with his bass-playing wife Dorothy, the couple team up with Rod Worthing and play for a few hours, three times a week.
“It’s just a lot of fun,” he said. “I really enjoy playing music and was formerly involved with a band in Goulburn.”
Mr Calbert said some of his favourite tunes include San Antonio Rose, I Love You Because, Send Me The Pillow and Amazing Grace.
Apart from his regular musical exploits, Mr Calbert praised the men’s shed as ‘an excellent venue’.
“You can do anything here, everyone is very helpful here at the shed. They are a good bunch of blokes.
“It’s been good to get my hands back on the tools again.”
