Known familiarly throughout the town and district as Les and Tory Crisp, Port Macquarie’s former mayor and mayoress were paid high tribute in a testimonial dinner tendered them on Friday evening. About 200 people sat down to dinner, giving the function the widest possible representation.
An illuminated address was presented to Mr. Crisp by Mr. J.T. Monaghan, retired under secretary, for Local Government, and a Certificate of Service to Local Government was presented to Mr. Crisp by the mayor of Kempsey, Ald. R. G. Melville, who is a member of the executive of the Local Government Association. The illuminated address praised the efforts of both Mr. and Mrs. Crisp during their long term as mayor and mayoress.
Ald. Crisp first joined Port Macquarie’s council in 1947, and became mayor in 1949. After two and a quarter years as mayor he resigned from the council and went to Newcastle, in April, 1952. He returned to Port Macquarie, in 1953, and rejoined the council when Ald. Peter Dann resigned in June, 1955. Ald. Crisp was re-elected mayor when Ald. D. S. Kennedy declined nomination after the general election in December 1956. Ald. Kennedy, again became mayor for several years, and Ald. Crisp gave up that position finally in mid-1967, after a total of nine years in the chair.
Port Macquarie’s mayor, Ald. C.C. Adams, presided. A delightful meal served by the women’s auxiliary of the RSL, speeches and wonderful entertainment made it a pleasant evening not only for the Crisps but for all of the assembled guests.
Lions Club in Wauchope
The inaugural meeting of Wauchope Lions Club will be held in February. The club will be sponsored by Port Macquarie Lions, who sold the idea to 32 leading Wauchope citizens at a special dinner on Wednesday night. A busload of 36 local Lions travelled to the dinner, held in the Wauchope Country Club. Club member Bill Parsons, past international director, gave an address, and the zone chairman Mr. Syd Davey of Taree, answered questions. At the conclusion of the dinner, the Wauchope guests made a unanimous decision to form a Lions Club.
The club secretary, Mr. John Costigan, has reported a gratifying response to the club’s appeal for old stockings. A wool bale full has already been sent away to India, where they are used as bandages in leper colonies. Mr. Costigan asks the townspeople to keep the stockings rolling in, as the club hopes to send a bagful every month.
Evening Milk Delivery
This Thursday will see a change in the retail deliveries of milk and cream in the Port Macquarie municipality when evening deliveries of milk to residents of the town will commence in place of the present morning deliveries. This change has been approved by the NSW Milk Board following applications received from all registered milk vendors in Port Macquarie, and supported by the municipal council and the supplying company, Hastings Co-op Ltd. Prior to approving this change a survey of customers was required by the Milk Board. The new hours of deliveries are fixed at between 5pm and 10pm daily.
