The second race of the summer series in the morning was sailed in a lovely little Easterly with the last of the run-in tide, and the afternoon’s fourth heat of the club championship was sailed in a slightly stronger breeze with the tide now running out and strengthening as the race progressed.
In the catamarans in the morning race, Tony Kuhn on Stella won on yardstick ahead of Dave Winter on Spica and Kelly Miller on Hummer.
Terry Howard in Ratz won the morning race for the mono hulls on yardstick. Second place was a dead heat between Tony Walker in Deep Purple and newcomer Craig Lee in Leeway, who in turn were only 11 seconds ahead of fourth placed Simon Gandy and Steve Couch in Voyager.
The finishing order for the rest of the mono hull fleet was Norman Broomhall and Allan Pogonowski in John Haldane, Sharon Carney and Stuart Symons in Jupiter, Elsa Gandy and Jaiden Burke in Flying Fish, and Steve Bohlsen and Scott Witchard in Splash Dance.
The afternoon’s Club Championship race for catamarans was almost two boat races on yardstick. Stella raced Jack Corthals on Harpic all race for the win, and further back in the fleet, Hummer fought Spica all race to take third.
Stella and Harpic also took the first 2 handicap positions, but Spica managed to get the 3 rd position over Hummer.
Paul Robertson and Warren Sykes in Flembouyant were first on yardstick in the mono hull division in the Club Championship, beating Ratz by 10 seconds. Voyager was third ahead of Stuart Symons and Andrew Hurrell in Big Bang, Deep Purple, Leeway, Splash Dance, and Jupiter, now with Jane Cooper crewing for Sharon.
Voyager won on handicap ahead of Big Bang, Jupiter who were three seconds ahead of Ratz, Deep Purple, Flembouyant, and Leeway who was only eight seconds ahead of Splash Dance.
Next Sunday is the third race of the summer series starting with a handicap start at 2.00pm. Rob Barwick is rostered on duty.
