She gave the vote of thanks at the December 13 graduation ceremony at Wagga Wagga.
Dr Gawne-Ashcroft specialises in gerontology.
Her studies focused on person-centred care in residential aged care facilities.
She will continue to undertake research in improving care standards and quality practice.
Dr Gawne-Ashcroft’s original study was nursing followed by postgraduate studies in gerontology including a masters in gerontology.
“I was raised to have the highest respect for older people,” she said.
“I always treasure time with older people.
“I find I learn a lot from their wisdom and knowledge.
“They have got so much to offer.”
Dr Gawne-Ashcroft said study had an incredible impact on her life.
“It made me a stronger person because it actually tests everything you’ve got,” she said.
She thanked her family and the support of her managers and colleagues.
Dr Gawne-Ashcroft works for Catholic Care of the Aged as well as Charles Sturt University as a tutor and marker.
She is writing a book as a walk-though guide to entering residential aged care.
