The Uniting Mingaletta Port Macquarie resident turned 103 on December 28.
She celebrated with a morning tea at Uniting Mingaletta Port Macquarie, followed by lunch out with her daughter Carolyn, son-in-law Terry and grandson Andrew.
Edna was born in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra and grew up in the city’s eastern suburbs.
“I had a lovely mother who pointed me the right way, I think,” she said.
Edna attended Sunday school and retained a strong faith.
She has fond memories of lovely friends, playing tennis, ballroom dancing and holidays at her grandmother’s property at Bringelly.
Edna, along with her cousins, would sing and laugh, pick up fallen fruit from the orchard and play Uno by lamplight.
“I loved it,” she said about family time at the property.
Edna left school at 15 and went to secretarial college for a while.
“I met a lovely man at one of the dances and then he asked me would I like to go out Sunday afternoon,” she said.
“We ended up getting married.”
Edna, then 21, wore a wedding dress made by her mother when she exchanged vows with Eric Ryan.
They had two children – Bruce and Carolyn.
“I never drove a car – I walked everywhere,” she said.
“I played tennis and I danced and I was loved.”
Edna lived on her own after her husband passed away.
She moved to Port Macquarie about five years ago to be close to her daughter Carolyn.
Edna’s son Bruce, a chemical engineer, passed away about six years ago.
She has six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Edna attends activities at Uniting Mingaletta Port Macquarie including carpet bowls, bingo and entertainment.
“I am very fortunate to have lived when I have lived,” Edna said.
“When I went back to Bondi last time I could hardly walk along the street.”
