It sounds like the start of a joke, but when Riding for the Disabled Port Macquarie Wauchope’s Robert and Dee Pike brought one of their horses to the Governor’s Retirement Resort for a presentation on Friday, the residents and Nightmare bonded.
Organised by resident Phillipa Reiss, the RDA was visiting the resort to accept a cheque from funds raised during a Melbourne Cup day raffle.
Ms Reiss said the residents had pitched in to raise funds for a local organisation and, given their event was on Melbourne Cup day, they opted to present their proceeds to the RDA.
“Some of the residents don’t get out and about in the community that often, so bringing Nightmare into the resort was a really good thing to do,” she said.
“It just brightens up the day for some of the residents.
“This is just one little way that residents can help out raising funds for the RDA – because they do a wonderful job.
“This is one way that our residents can make a contribution to their community.”
The success of the RDA visit will see residents getting involved in more community-based events and activities in 2018, Ms Reiss said.
The residents handed the RDA group $262.
